Book and catalogue "Stories of the Security and Defence Industry of Latvia"

On Wednesday, March 29, to mark the tenth anniversary of the Federation of Security and Defence Industries of Latvia (hereinafter – FSDI Latvia), the book "Stories of the Security and Defence Industry of Latvia" will be presented, the authors of which are political scientists Elīna Egle-Ločmele, Dr. Māris Andžāns and historian Dr. Juris Ciganovs.

"Stories of the Security and Defence Industry of Latvia" will allow you to look back at the development of the military industry before the Second World War, during the Soviet era, the development of military technologies in past and future wars, as well as the development of the defence industry when Latvia joined NATO and the EU. The authors of the book are:

  • Historian, Deputy Head of the Latvian War Museum, Dr. Juris Ciganovs, writing a story about the beginnings of technical supply and military industry of the Latvian Army;
  • Dr. Māris Andžāns, political scientist, Vice-Rector for Academic and Sciences at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, and Director of the Geopolitics Research Centre, will tell the story between past and future wars and military technologies;
  • Elīna Egle-Ločmele, political scientist, Chairperson of the Board of the FSDI Latvia, will talk about the importance of Latvia's accession to NATO and the EU in the development of the defence industry.

Readers will learn about how the military industry and its oriented science have reached the peaks of industrial success in Latvia and the world. These peaks have provided significant support to soldiers' combat capabilities and encouragement to society to be innovative and resilient to crises, wars and political regime shifts.

Defence and dual products have been created in a wide range of sectors and sectors of the economy – mechanical engineering, clothing, electronics, food production. With the development of technology, more and more services created for civil uses are finding application in the armed forces and security institutions – transport and logistics, construction and infrastructure development, information and communications, satellite technologies, etc. Understanding the application of civilian products in the defence and security sectors, as well as the entry of security and defence products into the everyday life of society, will allow to create new synergies and partnerships as society adapts and drives economic transformation in hybrid warfare.

Currently, actively participating in strengthening the defence capabilities of Latvia, the EU and NATO and promoting security, Latvian entrepreneurs and scientists together with international partners are developing more and more new products and services. Therefore, this book is designed as a message about the security and defence industry of Latvia between the past and the future, describing and summarizing the contribution that is currently provided by the members and associate members of DAIF Latvia. The stories gathered empower the established partnerships and are an incentive for innovation, new products and services, projects and consortia.

The book will be the business card of companies and research institutions working in the defence and security industries in English. The book summarises the current capacities of the Latvian security and defence industry and research in a single catalogue. It will be the first to be received by foreign diplomats residing in Latvia, Latvian diplomats abroad and members of the NATO Industry Advisory Group – representatives of the world's leading military companies, which will gather for the first time for plenary sessions in June in Riga.
